A Behind-the-Scenes Look at a Newborn Photoshoot

Ever wondered what actually happens during a newborn photoshoot? Here’s your sneak peek into the magic behind the lens.
Newborn photos are some of the most treasured images a family can have. They freeze time in a way nothing else can—capturing the tiniest toes, soft tufts of hair, sleepy smiles, and that fresh newness that disappears far too quickly.
But what does it really look like behind the scenes of a newborn photoshoot?
As a specialist newborn photographer based in Porthcawl, South Wales, and a mum myself, I know how important it is for parents to feel confident, relaxed, and excited about their session. That’s why I’m opening the studio doors to share exactly what goes on during a newborn shoot, from the moment you arrive to that final click of the camera.
Welcome to the Studio: The First Moments
When you first arrive at my calm, warm studio, you’ll be greeted with a smile—and probably a cup of tea or coffee too. I’ve designed the space to be peaceful, homely, and safe, not just for your newborn but for you too. Whether you're running on 2 hours of sleep or just feeling a little overwhelmed, know that this is a judgement-free zone. I've been in your shoes!
From here, I’ll gently walk you through the session plan, discuss any must-have shots, colour themes, props, and poses, and help settle baby before we begin.
Why Warmth and Calm Matter
The studio is gently heated to a cozy temperature to help your baby stay sleepy and settled. Newborns are used to the warmth of the womb, so this comforting environment plays a huge role in ensuring a successful session.
There’s soft music playing in the background (or white noise if needed), calming essential oils in the air, and everything is designed to help baby (and you!) feel completely at ease.
The Session Flow: What Actually Happens
A typical session can take 2–3 hours—and no, it’s not because we’re taking photos the entire time. It’s because I go at your baby’s pace. Here’s what’s usually involved:
1. Feeding & Settling
We’ll often start with a feed if baby hasn’t just eaten. A full tummy makes for a relaxed, sleepy little one—ideal for those dreamy, curled-up poses.
Don’t worry if baby needs to feed multiple times. We go with the flow.
2. Wrapped Poses
We begin with simple, swaddled poses—these are perfect to ease your baby in and help them feel secure. It also gives us a chance to capture those tight little bundles that melt hearts.
3. Prop Shots
Think vintage buckets, rustic bowls, soft fluffy beds—carefully styled to match your aesthetic. Baby is always supported and posed with the utmost care and safety.
4. Beanbag Posing
This is where the magic happens. Those signature sleepy poses—like the "froggy" pose or "bum-up"—are taken on a soft posing beanbag using safe techniques honed from years of training and experience.
5. Parent & Sibling Photos
These are often the most emotional parts of the session. We’ll take intimate, natural photos of you holding your baby, gently interacting, or just soaking it all in.
Safety Is Everything
Behind every sweet photo you see on Instagram is a trained newborn photographer who knows exactly how to safely pose your baby.
I’ve trained with leading newborn photography specialists, hold an enhanced DBS check, and have completed certifications in newborn posing and safety. Your baby’s comfort is always the top priority.
Some poses are composite images—made from two or more photos to ensure baby's head, neck, and limbs are always fully supported. Never attempt these poses without professional training.
What You Don’t See on Camera: The Little Moments
Nappy changes mid-session
Gentle rocking and shushing
Burping breaks
Lots of patience, cuddles, and baby-led pauses
Sessions are never rushed. You can feed in private, rest on the studio sofa, or even doze off (yes, it happens!) while I carefully capture the story of your little one’s earliest days.
Dressing Baby and You
I provide a beautiful range of wraps, headbands, bonnets, rompers, and props for baby. You don’t need to bring anything unless there's something sentimental you’d like to include.
For parents, I suggest soft, neutral tones and avoiding heavy patterns. Think timeless. If you’re unsure what to wear, I’m happy to guide you before the shoot.
After the Shoot: What Happens Next
Once your session is complete, I begin the delicate process of editing each image by hand, ensuring every detail is preserved and enhanced without altering your baby’s natural beauty.
You’ll be invited back to the studio or sent a secure gallery link (depending on your preference) to view and select your favourite images. From there, you can choose printed artwork, albums, or digital collections.
Why These Sessions Mean So Much
Newborn photography isn’t just about taking pictures—it’s about preserving moments that are fleeting and precious. You’ll never get this time back. Your baby will grow, change, and become someone new before your eyes.
That’s why I do what I do. Because in those quiet studio moments, with sleepy eyes and tiny hands, we freeze a little piece of magic forever.
