Enhanced DBS checked newborn Photographer

Updated: Nov 4, 2023

Your newborn deserves to be in the safest of hands.

Becoming a parent can be very overwhelming, it is completely normal to feel anxious whilst everything is still new and you’re adjusting to the new normal, that’s your new baby depending on you 24/7.

South Wales Newborn Photographer who holds an up to date enhanced DBS

When I was expecting my daughter seven years ago, I knew I wanted newborn photos of her. Document her first days was very important, because babies change so quickly, and we only get one chance at getting this right.

Is my local newborn photographer putting safeguarding first? The decision was made to have newborn photos of my daughter, but I didn’t realise it would turn into an endless task to find a local trained newborn photographer who also held an up to date enhanced DBS. The small handful I found were fully booked months in advance. This is when I made the decision to train with the best newborn photography trainer in the industry, I saw a need to provide a safe service for parents with quality photographs. Ask yourself… Could you hand your baby over to someone you hardly know?

It doesn’t feel right handing baby over to someone you know little to nothing about, and why should it feel right?

You don’t know their background, if they are suitable to be working with babies or children, how experienced they are, and you are relying on trust. This is exactly why I have a yearly Enhanced DBS check (Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service), giving new parents like you the peace of mind and transparency of myself as a person. At the end of the day, you will be handing your most precious possession over to someone who you might have only had a short phone call with. You are putting all your trust in the hands of a newborn photographer, handing them your irreplaceable baby, so in my eyes paying as little as £13 a year is the least I can do to give you the peace of mind your little one is safeguarded.

Beautiful baby photos from a trusted photographer.

It is so important to trust who you hand your newborn over to, your newborn photographer will be comforting your newborn, posing them for the photoshoot, then editing and backing up your little ones gallery, you don’t want any old hands doing this!

You might hear “baby will not be left alone” and to some extent they wont be, but a newborn session happens soon after the birth of your new baby when mums body is in recovery, and toilet trips are unavoidable. In fact, I am yet to meet a mum post birth who hasn’t frequented the bathroom during a newborn session. You might have mastered the fastest toilet breaks in record breaking history during a studio session, but it only takes a split second! You really can’t be too careful, so I won’t say anymore.

What is a DBS check?

The Government has introduced new safeguarding and vetting requirements which affect all individuals who have contact with children. The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) prevents unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children by deciding whether a person should be placed on or removed from a barred list.

Holding a DBS is VERY important to make sure that people working with children are suitable to do so, and can provide a safe environment, protected all from harm.

What is the different between the levels of DBS Checks?

There are three different levels of DBS Check:

  • Basic Check will reveal any unspent convictions or cautions the applicant has.

  • Standard Check will reveal any spent or unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings the applicant has.

  • Enhanced Check will reveal the same information as a Standard Check, as well as any relevant information held by local police. This is the one I have.

Are newborn photographers legally required a DBS check?

This depends on what’s involved in the specific photographer’s role. Typically photographers can work with children as long as they are supervised. However, any photographer working regularly with children benefits from having been checked as this provides customers with an added level of assurance.

Why have I been checked?

as well as giving my clients peace of mind that they’re newborn is in safe hand, I hold nearly 20 years of experience in teaching, and mentoring teachers alongside my photography business, who also performed regular enhanced check with the Disclosure & Barring Service.

Does the DBS check run out?

I am signed up the Enhanced DBS Update Service, so my certification is live, up to date and will not run out, so I am always covered.

Can I see your certificate?

Yes, all my clients can request to see my DBS certification once booked in. The government website allows charities, businesses and organisations access to check my DBS status using my DBS Update Service ID and details.

Please note: Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) in December replaced CRB in 2012
