11 Things twin Mums and parents of Multiples are repeatedly told.

Updated: Nov 10, 2021

Last week I was blessed to photograph twin newborn babies, it was amazing to watch a twin mum working her magic to tandem feed, multi-tasking whilst burping, change them in quick succession and doubling up with the love. Between photographing and the endless cuddles, we had a good giggle over what people feel it’s okay to ask twin mums and parents of multiples and mums to be. Here is our list and how we felt most would like to respond…

Which one is best?

At what exactly?

Are they natural?

They don’t look fake to me!

Were they all planned?

We planned to get pregnant, yes!

You have your hands full

Now you mention it, I would love a sit down, please feel free to help! Cue them running into the distance never to be seen again.

Are they identical?

They look exactly the same to me. Yep, identical!

Do twins run in the family?

Fraternal twins are genetic, identical twins are a random act of nature!

Did you have a vaginal birth?

What did you say your name was again?

Why do you dress them the same?

It’s actually easier, no arguments over picking the wrong outfits!

Why don’t you dress them the same?

They were dressed the same before breakfast, you should see my washing pile!

Double Trouble!

Yes, and double the love

I don’t know how you do it?

I believe you're only given what you can handle.

How do you tell them apart?

Ohhh dear! Do I really need to explain how dumb this sounds?!

You can’t be pregnant with twins/triplets/?! You’re too skinny!

From day one a mums instinct kicks in to make sure her babies are going to be a healthy weight when they are born. Comments like can spike anxiety, please be mindful.

My babies are a year apart; it’s like having twins!

No, it’s not. Only having twins is like having twins.

I have two children 12 months apart. I think that’s harder than twins.

I didn’t know it was a contest.

Do you feed them at the same time?

Yes, in fact I try to get them to do pretty much everything at the same time. Sleep at the same time. Play at the same time. Sometimes they give us a special treat of sh*tting at the same time!

They’re not real twins, unless you have two boys or two girls.

They shared the same womb, that makes them twins!

Wow [you’re pregnant with multiples?]! You are going to get so big!

Do not talk about my weight. You’re never supposed to tell a woman she’s big, even if she’s pregnant with twins! And thank you for stating the obvious.

Oh, twins must be so easy, since they have a built-in playmate!

No, that just means twice the work and a lot of refereeing!

Boy girl twins, are they identical?

I don’t even know what more to say here other than no… that is not possible.

You’re done, right?

I don’t need anyone telling me how many children I should or shouldn’t have.
