Porthcawl Newborn Baby went International

Being a mum of three I have first-hand experience of the newborn baby stage, it’s a chapter that you won’t be able to repeat. Babies grow very fast, time will pass quickly, which is why photos of your new baby will be the most highly valued artwork you will ever own. Like most lockdown parents, the photos I took of my son became the most tangible way to celebrate his birth with family and friends who were unable to visit. I’m not going to lie, photographing my own in isolation was challenging, especially whilst recovering from a C-section and juggling his 16 month brother and three year old sister, who also wanted time to bond with their new brother. Like my newborn sessions with clients, baby always led the way and it wasn’t time boxed or rushed, giving plenty of time to feed and ensure my son was content.

Newborn safety is paramount

I cant stress enough that baby safety is paramount and a newborn baby should only be handled by someone who is trained in newborn safety posing and experienced in practicing newborn posing safely. I’m grateful to have been mentored by world renowned photographer and trainer Tracy Willis, who also runs the largest specialist Photography show in Europe, The Newborn and Portrait Show. Being newborn trained means I am responsive enough to foresee if baby is comfortable, allowing me to capture cheeky smiles, a tired yawn and watch their little personalities unfold before your eyes, like I did with my son when he cuddled the wonderful little lion (bought from Snugglies).

Creating everlasting memories doesn’t stop after the click of the camera, I was very fortunate that my photo was selected to be critiqued by Russ Jackson, who gave me some valuable feedback on how to tweak the photo and encouragement on how to progress my skills to the highest levels. It blew my mind to have such high praise and encouragement from such a world-renowned photographer (Thank you so much Russ).

It was never my intention to enter my son’s newborn photo into a competition, but Tracy encouraged me to enter my work into SWPP (the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers), one of the world’s largest organisations for pro and aspiring photographers. I am so glad I followed Tracy’s advice, from hundreds of entries from world renowned Photographers located across the globe I was delighted to have been rewarded with a Highly Commended by the SWPP for my first ever competition entry.

Soon after hearing the good news I also found out that I had been awarded the Portrait of Children award from Photocrowd (Absolutely ecstatic by this point) and finally the same photo of my son was published in the Bump, Baby and Beyond international magazine.
